Joe Miller – Executive Director

Joe Miller is the Executive Director for Souls Harbour Rescue Mission. After working in the manufacturing industry for many years, he felt called to move from 'building things' to 'building people.' He has a passion to see the people that walk through the Mission's doors, get the help they need; whatever their situation may be. He enjoys fishing and the outdoors and often finds God in the stillness of nature. He writes here his thoughts on poverty, society, faith, and his reflections on life.

Joy & Sorrow

Once again, my apologies as it’s been quite some time since I posted a blog so please forgive me. As I’ve said before I have no idea who reads this blog, if anyone actually does, but I’m hoping I can just be honest with you, whoever it is that’s out there? Lately, I’ve been attending a […]

God-nomics 301

Well … here we are fresh off of RRSP season, and though I’ve been a bit busy with the Mission’s Samaritan Project, see www.samaritanproject.ca for details, as promised in my previous blog, I think this is the perfect time to talk about the 3rd and final part of my blog series titled “God-nomics”. So, thanks […]

God-nomics 201

In my last blog, I introduced my ‘Theory of God-nomics”, and so today I would like to expand on that by first introducing the following statistic from the anti-poverty charity; Oxfam. “As of January 17th, 2016, just 62 people, 53 of them men, own as much wealth as the poorest half of the entire world […]

God-nomics 101

What do you think of when you hear the word economics? Most people would say money, but I think that if you’re looking at the definition of economics from God’s viewpoint, it might just look a little different. After all, in Matthew 6:24 the scriptures say: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will […]

Ministry defined

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ministry as: 1) the office, duties, or functions of a minster; 2) the body of minsters of religion; 3) a person or thing through which something is accomplished; 4) the body of ministers governing a nation or state from which a smaller cabinet is sometimes selected, etc. My definition of ministry: […]

Loving Your Neighbour

First of all, I would like to apologize for my tardiness in not posting a new blog for quite some time. I could tell you that I’ve been busy with work here at the Mission, and I have, but the truth be known, I’ve really just been enjoying the summer! Even as I write this […]

Spikenard & Smoke

So … over the last few months I’ve been ‘hanging out’ at our soup kitchen off and on. Just watching the people that we serve and assessing how the Mission can serve them better, and looking for more ways to support my staff in serving them. Over the last year I’ve also been reading the […]

Midas the Fractured Youth

Well here I am back in California. It’s been a year since the annual RR Conference, and though I’ve been here numerous times over the years, it’s still a great week of learning and refreshing!  This morning as I was sitting on the balcony watching the boats launch in the bay, and soaking in all […]

Live long and prosper!

Hey everyone, I just wanted to wish you all a very Happy New Year, and to say that as I personally reflect on 2015, one of the things that comes to mind is the passing away of Leonard Nimoy, and for all of us “treckies” out there how can you not be inspired by […]

Cloth can break iron.

I find it hard to believe that fifteen years have gone by since I wrote this poem, I feel so old now. Anyway, I wrote this at a time when I was struggling with a lot of things in my life; battling an addiction, waiting for my divorce to be finalized, wrestling with the realization […]
